After reading a recent article on landthink.com, I was intrigued by their proclamation that "Ag is back!"
It's no secret that America's farmers are aging. The average age of farmers in America has been on the rise since 1910, today, the average age is 55. For every six farmers over the age of 65, there is only one farmer under the age of 35. With that said, there are some other statistics that are making the future of agriculture look bright...enrollment in agriculture school has increased, and young people are supporting their local farmers through farmers markets, and are blowing up social media with the sustainable food movement. The reasons most young folks cite for going into farming : many don't want to be part of the stifling rat race and find that there is very little job security in the corporate world anyway; and the demand for locally grown food is stronger than ever.
You may have also seen the news story we posted here from The Missoulian last week. The UK Food and Agriculture Association estimates that the word population will increase by 47% to 8.9 billion by 2050. That is a potentially huge food marketplace, and means that the agriculture industry is full of huge opportunity!
